Compliance in China

  • Opt-in: Opt-in is required, usually in the form of online registration or a service subscription.
  • Opt-out: All marketing and promotional content, both 1-way and 2-way, must end with "拒收请回复R", which means "To unsubscribe, please return R".
  • Sending times: Marketing messages may only be sent 0800hrs to 2200hrs (GMT8), Monday to Friday.
  • Restricted content: Adult content · Political content · Gambling · Religious content · Trading and stock exchange · Money lending · Falun Gong and similar politically driven factions · Spam · Multi-level marketing · Property marketing · Survey-related traffic
  • Registration: A TAG ID registration is recommended, and this tag is prepended to the message content. Registration of content is recommended to prevent blocking by the operators. Registration requires the sender ID or tag, sample content, company name, company URL, business nature, service description, estimated volume and traffic type for both transactional and marketing traffic.
  • Survey traffic is blocked because many companies use surveys as a means of phishing.
  • OTP messages linking to prohibited services are also prohibited.
  • Network operators block messages containing sensitive words; the banned word list is extensive, changes over time, and is not shared publicly, so test messages are recommended before larger campaigns.
  • Dedicated short codes for 2-way messaging cannot be shared by multiple brands.

These rules are what we generally check against, however they may not be up-to-date. We'll always keep you informed of what is needed for each destination throughout any registration process.
