Compliance in Nigeria

  • Opt-in: Opt-in is required for marketing traffic.
  • Sending times: It is suggested to send marketing traffic only during daytime hours.
  • Restricted content: Gambling · Adult content · Religious content
  • SMS delivery to CDMA networks such as Visaphone and M-Tel is prone to issues.
  • MTN and 9Mobile operate a do-not-disturb (DND) registry, while other operators do not filter; the filtering applies only to non-banking marketing traffic.
  • Only end subscribers can request removal of their number from the DND registry to resume receiving bulk or marketing traffic.
  • For domestic traffic and brands, marketing and transactional traffic must be separated using two different sender IDs, for example CocaCola and CocaCola-AD.
  • Transactional sender IDs may only be used for financial, payment or OTP use cases; other use cases such as informational messages are not accepted by the operators.
